February 6, 2012 - According to reports a suspected hit and run driver of three bicyclists was arrested Saturday.

According to Seal Beach Police Sgt. John Scott the police department received a call Saturday at approximately 8:06 that three bicyclists had been struck on Pacific Coast Highway in the vicinity west of Anderson Street. The call said a woman driving an SUV had struck the bicyclists.

Sgt. Scott said the Seal Beach Police Department sent a radio broadcast to the Huntington Police Department with a description of the vehicle. The woman driving the SUV was stopped on the Pacific Coast Highway traveling eastbound in the vicinity of the intersection at 17th Street in Huntington Beach.

The woman was arrested and has been identified as Juli Ann Brown age 46 of Anchorage, Alaska. Brown was arrested on suspicion of hit and run, suspicion of driving under the influence and suspicion of narcotics possession, Sgt. Scott said.

According to Huntington Beach Police Department Brown was booked and taken to the Orange County jail.

January 15, 2012 - According to reports actor Gene Hackman was struck and injured while riding a bicycle. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, actor and Academy Award winner Gene Hackman age 81 was struck at approximately 3:00 p.m. Friday in the bike accident.

Hackman who was injured according to his representative was airlifted to a trauma hospital after his bicycle was struck by a car in the Florida Keys. They stated the airlift was necessary due to the his location in the Florida Keys for treatment and routine tests.

Santa Ana Bicyclist Struck on Christmas Day in Critical Condition

December 26, 2011 - According to reports a Santa Ana bicyclist was struck on Christmas night and is listed in critical condition. According to Santa Ana Police Sgt. Richard Gatto the bicycle accident occurred at approximately 6:15 p.m. Sunday in the 100 block of Euclid Street.

Sgt. Gatto said the bicyclist that is identified as being 50 years old was struck in the northbound lanes of Euclid Street and it was unclear if the bike rider was in the street or in a crosswalk when the collision occurred.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene of the bicycle crash and spoke with police, there have been no arrests or citations issued, according to reports. The injured bicyclist was transported to the UCI Medical Center in Orange, he was listed in critical condition and according to Sgt. Gatto was undergoing surgery late Sunday night.

Bicyclist Killed in Hit and Run in Lake Forest

December 14, 2011- According to reports a bicyclist was killed in a hit and run in Lake Forest Tuesday night. According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department the accident was reported at approximately 10:11 p.m. in the vicinity of the Serrano Road and Ridge Road intersection in Lake Forest.

According to Sheriff’s Lt. Jim England witnesses saw a white van leaving the scene after a bicyclist was struck, traveling northbound on Serrano Road. The bicyclist is identified as a 47 year old man that was killed in the crash, his identity has not been released.

Man in Crosswalk Struck By Car in Coma

December 9, 2011 - According to reports a man in a crosswalk in Napa that was struck by a car Thursday. According to Napa Police Department Sgt. Paul Paniagua, the man was struck at approximately 1:35 p.m. at the intersection of H Street, while walking his bicycle across Jefferson Street.

The man that was struck has been identified as Jose Garcia age 39. Garcia was struck in the intersection crosswalk by a black Mercedes Benz that was traveling in the inner lane heading northbound, according to Sgt. Paniagua.

The impact of the collision threw Garcia onto the hood of the vehicle and then to the pavement. Garcia was transported to Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa and put into the Intensive Care Unit. According to Sgt. Paniagua, Garcia suffered head injuries, multiple abrasions, a fractured hip and lower left leg in the accident and is currently in a coma.

Sgt. Paniagua of the Napa Police, said the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and has been identified as Steven Cirimele age 70 and resident of Benicia. Gunman Opens Fire on Group of Bicycle Riders

According to police the group of bicyclists in South Los Angeles was shot at on Thursday night at appoximately11:15 p.m. in the area of Vernon and Long Beach Avenue.

April 8, 2011-According to reports a Long Beach Fire Department captain was arrested after a hit and run accident involving a bicyclist.

According to the Seal Beach Police Department John Hines age 38 of Huntington Beach was arrested for felony hit and run and felony driving under the influence. Hines was booked at the Seal Beach Police Department and was released on $50,000 bail.
Hines is accused of allegedly hitting a 48 year old bicyclist and fleeing the scene, according to police.

The bicycle accident was reported to police at the Seal Beach Police Department, on April 1st at approximately 1:34 p.m. on Westminster Avenue in the vicinity east of Bolsia Chica Road. Hines was driving a Chevrolet truck, according to Sgt. Steve Bowles, when it appears he swerved into the bike lane at approximately 60 miles an hour and hit the 48 year old rider, who was traveling east.

According to Sgt. Bowels, Hines did not stop to check on the injured bicycle rider that was thrown from the bike hitting the dirt shoulder of the road. Hines who kept driving was followed by witnesses to his Huntington Beach residence, where he was arrested.

Child Riding a Bicycle In Critical Condition After Being Struck By SUV

January 18, 2011 - According to reports a child riding a bicycle is in critical condition after being struck by an SUV.

According to Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Greg McKeown the accident occurred at approximately 7:26 a.m. when the child was riding his bike to school.
The child was struck by an SUV in the vicinity of Colver Drive and Portola Parkway, according to Capt. McKeown and was trapped underneath the SUV.

The rescue crew used rescue airbags to lift the vehicle and Capt. McKeown stated he was transported to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana. According to Capt. McKeown the child is in critical condition.

Bicyclist Killed When Struck by Two Vehicles

December 23, 2010-According to reports a bicyclist was killed after being struck by two vehicles. According to authorities 69 year old Jurgen Ankenbraind of Huntington Beach was struck by two vehicles and killed Wednesday.

The accident was reported to the California Highway Patrol at approximately 5:35 p.m., according to Huntington Police Department Sgt. Rob Warden. Sgt. Warden stated the accident occurred at the intersection of Brookhurst Street and Villa Pacific Drive. Jurgan Ankenbrand was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash at approximately 5:40 p.m.

Authorities initial investigation leads them to believe that both Ankenbrand and a dark colored Toyota 4-Runner were exiting Villa Pacific Drive onto Brookhurst Street when the driver of the Toyota made a left turn northward. The Toyota struck Ankenbrand, who at the time was traveling in the same direction as Ankenbrand.

According to Sgt Warden the driver of the Toyota 4-Runner fled the scene after hitting Ankenbrand, who fell into the southbound No. 1 lane of Brookhurst Street where he was struck by a white Honda Odyssey van that was traveling southbound. The driver of the Honda stopped at the scene of the crash.

According to the Huntington Beach Police Department there were no other injuries in the crash and the accident remains under investigation. Police are asking witnesses to the crash to contact them.

In a bicycle accident that occurred over the weekend involving Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa when a taxi driver pulled out in front of him causing him to fall from the bicycle and break his elbow.

The mayor stated what the driver did was not illegal, but he could have used more caution. The accident that ended in a broken elbow occurred on Venice Boulevard in the vicinity of Hargis and Hervey Streets, when Mayor Villaraigosa was riding with a member of his security detail. Upon hitting his breaks suddenly he flipped over his bicycle, but did not make contact with the taxi cab.

The driver of the taxi cab provided his information to the mayors security personnel, while the mayor was transported to UCLA Medical Center.

A lawsuit filed by the parents of the rider has been settled in amounts over one million dollars against the driver and a bar’s insurance company that served a bicyclist who was fatally wounded in December of 2006 after being hit by a drunk driver.

John Osborne, the plaintiff’s attorney said Robert L’Ecuyer and Barbara Nordlund agreed to the offer from Berky’s in the amount of $1 million dollars for the death of Paul L’Ecuyer. $25,000 is to be paid on Monday by Melissa Arrington’s insurance company, being just one day prior to the trial that was to be held in the Pima County Superior Court.

The death of Paul L’Ecuyer’s death resulted in a 10.5 year prison sentence for Arrington, decided in January 2008 by a jury who found her guilty of aggravated DUI and negligent homicide.

Jurors were told by prosecutors that about 8:40 p.m. 45 year old L’Ecuyer was in the bike lane on his Schwinn when Arrington struck him after swerving off of the road and finally coming to a stop after going 800 more feet.

Already driving on a license that had been suspended, Arrington’s blood-alcohol level showed to be 0.156 in a test that was performed 2 2/3 hours after the accident occurred, being twice the level for a DUI. Witnessing the crash, a witness stated that before the collision occurred Arrington had swerved off of the road two other times.

Arrington’s lawyers stated the collision was just a tragic accident.
Arrington stated in testimony that she had recently signed an agreement for lease to purchase on her home located in Vail, and stopped at Berky’s located at 5769 E. Speedway to celebrate with her friends, where she had three drinks. She also stated that as she was reaching for hand sanitizer is when the accident occurred.

Osborne stated that L’Ecuyer’s parents filed the lawsuit against Arrington and Berky’s as a reminder to everyone how important the need is to continue “working tirelessly to do away with drinking and driving and to over-serving at bars."
Osborne said that the plans for the settlement are going to be used for the funding of a scholarship named after their son shortly after he lost his life, and for the education of their nephews’ and neices’. Part of the money might also be donated to Phoenix College and the University of Arizona.

When Arrington was being sentenced, Judge Michael Cruikshank stated the reason an aggravated sentence was given to Arrington was because of a recorded phone call that he found between a friend and Arrington to be "breathtaking in its inhumanity." Instead of being silenced from shock, Arrington laughed during the call that was made from Pima County jail where the gentleman told Arrington that someone they were both acquainted with said she deserved "a medal and a (expletive) parade because she had taken out "a (expletive) tree hugger, a bicyclist, a Frenchman and a gay guy all in one shot."

When the man stated it was a terrible thing for him to say, after laughing Arrington simply responded with "No, it's not." During the proceedings of the hearing, siblings and L’Ecuyer’s mother described him as being being a person with "enormous ideals" who helped pass out Martin Luther King Jr. Day fliers and urging others to write down their goals and dreams, who rode in other charity events and handed out baskets to needy people for the Thanksgiving holiday.

L’Ecuyer held degrees in counseling and career development from Phoenix College and the University of Arizona, as well as degrees from Chapman University.

According to Penningtons co-manager Bill Stankey, Seeck was critically injured, his injuries include head trauma, nine broken ribs, a punctured lung, and he is currently at UCLA Medical Center on life support. Oates was fatally injured and Woods truck then crashed through a wall and into the back yard of a home.

Bicyclist Hit By Van In Fullerton

Sgt. He was transported to the UCI Medical Center in critical condition and has since stabilized with major internal injuries and head injuries.

On the corner of High Street and Cardiff Place a woman bicycling on a mountain bike, Tuesday evening was injured when a motorist making a left turn and hitting the woman.

The unidentified 24 year old woman was transported by air to the San-Jose area hospital with head injuries and a cut on her arm however, it is not known what the extent of her head injuries were or what condition she was admitted to the hospital.

According to reports a statement from Officer M. Bailey said the driver of the vehicle when making the turn according to reports stated they had not seen the bicyclist prior to hitting her.

The woman on the bicycle was riding down High Street and heading toward Storey Street and the accident occurred at approximately 5:10 according to reports.

The identity of the motorist or the bicycle rider was not released, along with the vehicle model or year; it was also not released if the driver would be charged with any violations from the accident.

It is also not known the current condition of the bicyclist, nor is it clear if she had been wearing a helmet.
